Seattle, Washington – A woman was seriously injured early Sunday after a shooting broke out near a North Beacon Hill residence, prompting a Seattle police investigation into what detectives believe began with an altercation outside a gathering.

The shooting was reported at about 5:58 a.m. on May 17 near the 1700 block of South State Street. Officers with the Seattle Police Department responded to the area after reports of gunfire and found evidence that shots had been fired before they arrived. No victim was located at the scene at first, but police soon learned that an 18-year-old woman had been taken to Harborview Medical Center with a gunshot wound to her leg.

Police said the woman remains in stable but serious condition.

Investigators later determined that several young adults had been attending a gathering at a nearby residence before the violence unfolded. According to police, an unidentified male arrived in a vehicle and became involved in an altercation outside with the victim shortly before the shooting. After gunfire erupted, the suspect left the area in an unknown direction before officers reached the scene.

Two people placed the injured woman into a car and drove her to Harborview Medical Center for treatment, police said. During the shooting, bullets also struck at least two vehicles in the area, adding to the evidence detectives are now reviewing as they work to piece together what happened in the moments before and after the gunfire.

Detectives with the Seattle Police Department’s Gun Violence Reduction Unit are leading the investigation. Their work will focus on identifying the suspect, determining what led to the confrontation and gathering any additional evidence from witnesses, nearby residents or others who may have information.

Police have not announced any arrests, and the suspect had not been publicly identified.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Seattle Police Department Violent Crimes Tip Line at (206) 233-5000.

The case is being investigated under Incident 2026-137507 by the South Precinct.
