Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell to attend the beginning of the building of the largest Humanity multi-family property countrywide
Seattle, Washington – Working with Amazon, Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King & Kittitas Counties (SKKC) is poised to start a massive project in Seattle’s Columbia City in an attempt to solve King County’s dire shortages of affordable homes. Set for Monday, September 16, 2024, the ceremony honors the beginning of building of the largest Habitat for Humanity multi-family property in the United States.
Situated at 5022 MLK Jr., the property consists of a 58-home condominium complex with studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units. Mostly sponsored by Amazon’s Housing Equity Fund, this project is a major part of Habitat for Humanity’s goal to help local underprivileged areas.
The ceremony will feature distinguished visitors like Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and Lt. Governor Denny Heck, so highlighting the significance of the project to the local community. Their participation, together with that of other officials from Habitat SKKC, Amazon, and a homeowner who gained from Habitat’s programs, emphasizes the cooperative nature and communal focus of this endeavor.
Expected to be finished in spring 2026, the 5022 MLK project will give families making less than 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) affordable home options. With residences ranging in size from 370 to 690 square feet, the development is positioned to provide quick access to public transportation, hence improving the quality of life of its occupants by tying them to larger Seattle.
Apart from addressing the housing needs, the project is structured with community at its center. Residents will have a public area in 2,000 square feet outside that will encourage neighbor participation and a sense of belonging. This clever addition reflects Habitat SKKC’s dedication to not only creating houses but also strengthening neighborhood ties.
This project is a big step toward environmentally friendly urban growth. Habitat for Humanity guarantees that these houses stay affordable for next generations by putting the land under a Land Trust, independent of market swings. In Seattle, where average house costs have skyrocketed beyond many low-income households, this strategy is especially remarkable.
For many families trying to locate affordable accommodation in a competitive market, this project provides an element of hope. With applications for the condominiums commencing in Fall 2025, the project promises not only houses but also fresh starts for many people wishing to settle in one of Seattle’s most active districts.
