Violent disturbance at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle leads to multiple felony charges

Seattle, Washington – A violent disturbance inside a downtown Seattle hospital ended with a 29-year-old man in custody after police say he damaged an emergency treatment room, started a fire, and assaulted medical staff.

Officers were called to Harborview Medical Center around 10:15 a.m. following reports that a patient was destroying a trauma room. When police arrived, they learned the situation had already escalated into a struggle involving nurses and hospital security. According to the report, much of the equipment inside the room had been overturned or thrown as staff worked to contain the man.

Hospital personnel ultimately restrained the suspect after he broke open a direct oxygen line and ignited a bucket filled with medical equipment. The flowing oxygen increased the danger, creating conditions that could have triggered an explosion if the fire had spread. Staff and security intervened quickly to stop the flames and prevent further harm inside the facility.

Investigators said the man had originally arrived at the hospital the previous night seeking treatment for wrist injuries. After receiving care and being cleared for discharge, he reportedly became agitated. Police say he began throwing objects, spitting at employees, and kicking both nurses and guards. During the incident, he also fashioned a noose from plastic tubing and threatened to take his own life.

Authorities arrested the suspect on multiple charges, including assault, arson, property destruction, and interfering with a healthcare facility. Hospital officials estimated the damage to the emergency room exceeded $100,000. Police also noted the man has a history of assaultive behavior toward law enforcement and was wanted on several active warrants.

Under armed escort, he was transported by ambulance to the King County Jail for booking. Detectives with the Homicide and Assault Unit are continuing the investigation.
